How far in advance should I book train tickets in China?
Book important China train trips as soon as your chosen channel opens sales. Do not rely on same-day tickets for popular high-speed routes, holidays, weekends, or routes with few trains.

Short answer
For any train that matters to your itinerary, check 12306 or your booking platform as soon as your travel date is close enough for sales. Sales windows, station release times, and holiday availability can change, so use the current booking screen as the final source.
The practical rule is simple: if missing that train would break a hotel night, flight connection, tour, or family plan, book when sales open instead of waiting until arrival.
Book early for these trips
Book earlier for high-speed trains between major cities, weekend departures, national holidays, sleeper trains, long-distance routes, and any trip with a small number of convenient departures.
Also book early when several people need seats together or when you are traveling right after an international flight and need a predictable onward connection.
When flexible booking is okay
For frequent city pairs with many trains per day, an off-peak traveler can sometimes keep plans flexible. Still, avoid building the day around the last train unless you already have a confirmed ticket.
If your exact train sells out, look for nearby departure times, a different seat class, or another station in the same city. Large cities can have several major rail stations, so check travel time to the station before switching.
Before paying
Confirm the departure station, arrival station, passenger name, passport number, and change/refund rules. The original passport used for booking should be with you at the station.
Save the train number, station names, and booking confirmation offline. A screenshot is not a substitute for your passport, but it is useful when asking staff for help.
